Everyone wants a six pack, but there are so many other benefits from doing ab work. I have chronic back pain, thanks to my scoliosis. A few years ago, when I went to see a chiropractor, he recommended that I do 45 sec planks everyday. A strong core can support a weak back. I was so determined to strengthen my core, that I began attending regular Pilates and yoga. This was 4 years ago. Since then, I have continued to do core strengthening exercises on a regular basis. These are the changes I have noticed in my body.
Learning to engage my core has taught me to keep it engaged throughout the day. After a few months of Pilates, someone told me that I looked taller, I knew it was because I was standing taller with a flexed core.
Less Back Pain
Staying engaged in the core can take some of the weight and pressure out of the spine, and for me, it has resulted in less back pain and increased mobility in the spine.
It has been 4 years of regular core work and my weight has not changed dramatically but my body is much leaner and I have much more muscle definition around my abs and obliques.
I remember the first time I wore just a sports bra in hot yoga, I was so excited to feel confident in my skin. I am so proud of my body and the changes that I have made and I am always striving for the next goal.
I no longer regularly attend a Pilates studio, but I learned how it felt to engage my core. I have been including core work into my daily workouts, sometimes I will use weights or other equipment and sometimes I don’t use any equipment and I’ll just do it on the floor at home. That’s the great thing about core work, we do not need any equipment and it is something that you can benefit from, even if you only have a few minutes a day.
Stay tuned, I will be releasing a 6 week core challenge soon!
